2021 Scruton Lecture

We are very pleased to announce that Prof. Greg Kopp of the Universities of Western Ontario and Birmingham will be our Scruton Lecturer for 2021.   This is our biennial showpiece lecture, usually held in November, but unusually delivered this year online for the first time.  The lecture is held in honour of Kit Scruton, one of the pioneers of wind engineering.  Greg will join a list of very notable past Scruton Lecturers and we are grateful he accepted our invitation.

Here is a synopsis of Greg's talk, which we are sure will be of huge interest to everyone:

The use of boundary layer wind tunnels for determining wind loads on low-rise buildings has always been a challenge since there is a trade-off between the simulation of the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) and the size and accuracy of the building model. To fully simulate the turbulence spectrum in most wind tunnels typically requires a small model scale and a relatively low Reynolds number.

In contrast, a larger model scale improves the Reynolds number and allows for more accurate building features to be modelled, but at the expense of the accuracy of the wind simulation. This conundrum will be examined in the lecture. In particular, recent research into the fundamental mechanisms related to peak pressures on low building surfaces along with theoretical developments suggest that mismatches in the simulated ABL characteristics can be corrected implying that larger model scales can be used when needed.

Gregory Kopp is a Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering at the University of Western Ontario, where he has been since 1997. He currently holds the ImpactWX Chair in Severe Storms Engineering at Western, leading the Northern Tornadoes Project, which identifies and classifies every tornado in Canada. He also joined the University of Birmingham in 2019 as Professor of Wind Engineering. Kopp's research interests include wind tunnel test methods, building aerodynamics, wind effects on building components and cladding systems, and severe windstorms including tornadoes and downbursts. Kopp has been active in service to the community and is currently Chair of the ASCE 49 Standards Committee on Wind Tunnel Testing for Buildings and Other Structures, amongst other roles.
